Winterreise: Franz Schubert’s Song Cycle

Leon Memorial Hall / Performed by Adam Klein, tenor William Lipke, piano

I attended the Winterreise concert at Leon Memorial Hall on Saturday September, 21 2014 at 7pm. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect since it has been quite some time since I attended a music event. In actuality, I have never attended a professional musical performance that was such an intimate gathering. Leon Memorial Hall provides a small, modern gathering space that makes you feel like a part of the show. Each seat seems to be the best in the house.
The performers this particular evening were top notch. Adam Klein is a tenor as well as composer. He has performed in countless operas in the states and abroad. His career began as a boy chorister and soloist at the Metropolitan Opera. His career has spanned 44 years. Dr. William Lipke began studying the piano at the age of six and first appeared as a concert soloist at 12 years old. He maintains an active performance schedule as well as being a professor at Adams State University for the past 13 years.
I was blown away by this performance. They performed the entire cycle bringing me through an emotional explosion of heartache, isolation and, at times, exuberance. The emotive highs and lows left me enervated.
I would highly recommend experiencing the upcoming events that the music department at Leon Memorial Hall has to offer:
