Opportunities to travel abroad can be a rare find at ASC considering there is no foreign exchange program, however Professor Ben Waddell is offering a chance for ASC students to travel abroad in the summer of 2012.
Working with Professor Matias Fontenla from New Mexico University at Albuquerque, Waddell wants to take six to eight ASC students to Nicaragua to study sustainable development for the South American country.
The program starts with two classes, six credit hours, required for travel during the spring semester. These classes will give students the background needed to understand the importance of sustainable development during the trip. The program continues with a month spent travelling throughout Nicaragua visiting micro finance beneficiaries, coffee cooperatives, and alternative energy source sites. The idea is that by visiting these sites, one can really grasp the concept of sustainable resources and start understanding the topics discussed in the class, to see the work in action. The student can grasp the concept of promoting development while preserving the Earths natural resources.
If travelling to a foreign country wasn’t enough of incentive for students, Professor Waddell believes that these classes can be worked into their degree seeking plan if the student applies early enough, and talks to Professor Waddell soon enough. Professor Waddell believes that most, if not all students, of every major offered at Adams State can benefit from this trip. Sociology students are usually the most interested, but it may be just as useful if you are an education or business major. For more specific answers on how a major can benefit from this program, email Professor Waddell.
Financial aid and scholarships are offered to help with the cost of this once in a lifetime trip. There will be four internal scholarships valued at 500 dollars awarded on merit for this program. Professor Waddell is also willing to help students apply for financial aid, such as grants, for the program.
