Red Cross Preparedness Campaign: Home Fires Door-to-Door

As part of aiding in the safety and preparedness of others the American Red Cross will be going door-to-door throughout the San Luis Valley (SLV) starting in Alamosa November 15th to assist in home fire prevention.

Our goal is to reduce fire deaths and injuries in the US by 25% in 5 years. In partnership with the Adams State University Woman’s Soccer Team and the Alamosa Fire Department we will assess installation of smoke alarms and complete home-safety checklists and plans in vulnerable neighborhoods. With your permission the Red Cross and our partners will help you improve safety in your home, neighborhoods and community. No one wants to face a disaster however being prepared, especially for home fires, is priceless. Seven times a day, someone dies in a home fire.

Every 40 minutes, an injury from a fire is reported. Nearly 1,000 times every day, fire departments are called to home fires.  In the SLV we rely heavily on volunteers to respond to these types of incidents. Damage from US home fires is bigger than the entire annual sales of many Fortune 500 companies.  The 2014 Home Fire Preparedness Campaign is the kick-off of a multi-year, two-prong preparedness strategy for the American Red Cross. The goals of the strategy are to save lives that are lost to preventable causes like fires, disasters, choking, and cardiac arrest and to improve the resilience of the social safety net in the face of disasters.
