The Grizzlies couldn’t quite complete their comeback Friday afternoon as the Notre Dame de Namur University Argonauts’ fourth quarter pull-away improved their overall record to 6-7, atop the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA), while Adams State fell in their eighth loss of the season.
The game began with a couple of quick Argonaut scores by NDNU freshman midfielder Giovanni Midili, the first coming 50 seconds into the game, for his seventh and eighth goals of the season.Just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Adams State’s Chanson Miller put the team on the board with a hard unassisted goal.
The second quarter was where the Argos first attempted to separate themselves from the Grizzlies. NDNU scored the first three goals of the period, putting them up 5-1, with senior midfielder Greg Bearson accounting for two of them on his way to four goals for the game and the third coming from sophomore attack Kevin Nguyen. Grizzly Peter Santamaria’s last minute goal (sixth of the season) would close out the quarter for a first half score of 5-2.
Adams State’s effort to gain ground in the second half was initially effective as a couple of goals from Kevin Bertrand helped the team outscore their opponent 2-1 in the third quarter. The Grizzlies got as close as one goal behind with Anthony Willner’s fourth goal of the season. The score was 6-5 early into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for ASC, they wouldn’t get any closer. The Argos would then go on an offensive frenzy in the fourth quarter, compared to their play in the rest of the game. A goal from Derek Kimbrough, Bearson’s fourth and final goal of the game, two goals from Ryan Hulsey, and a completed hat trick for Nguyen added up to the Argonauts’ 6 fourth period goals. Efforts from Mac Piper and Michael Santamaria would help the scoreboard, but it wasn’t quite enough. The final score would be 12-7, ending the Grizzlies last home game of the season with 1-6 WILA record (1-8 overall) and keeping the Argos at a perfect 6-0 WILA record.
