Last week, Adams State College celebrated EARTH week with a number of fun and entertaining activities scheduled all throughout the week. The club prides itself on performing activities and volunteering to improve the community and preserve the Earth’s wonderful nature.

Beginning all the way back in 1970, Earth week has been celebrated and recognized on a national level. Professionals teamed up with U.S. senators to help raise people’s awareness concerning the Earth and its environment. Over the past decade, environmental concerns have increasingly become an issue in everyday life. The so-called “go green” movement has been made popular thanks, in large part, to environmental research that suggests that the Earth’s o-zone layer is weakening.

With that in mind, the EARTH group here at ASC scheduled and put together a few events that would raise the awareness of students and community alike. The lineup included a talent show.

The Earth Week Talent Show kicked off the activities last Monday night. The show featured a number of very impressive performances by students, all of which supported the cause.

Thursday afternoon, students were treated with a speech given by photographer John Fielder. Fielder is a well renowned photographer who is most famous for his work done here in the state of Colorado.

Weekend events really sparked excitement within the community. On Saturday morning, local residents, as well as students and staff, donated several goods to the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle garage sale.

On Sunday, people gathered out in front of the Rex Center on campus before partaking in a 6K run. The run was titled “Run for Water” with the proceeds going to the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust. The goal of the program is to conserve our land, water, and way of life in the Rio Grande Basin.

EARTH club, or Environmental Action for Resources, Transportation, and Health, has made a strong point to be very interactive within the community. They have participated in a number of different activities, all with the aspirations to improve the community and the world around us. EARTH week is only a portion of the activities this group manages throughout the year.
