Adams State EARTH, Environmental Action for Resources, Transportation, and Health is an organization focused on sustainability efforts. Earth Week kicked off Saturday, April 9 and is full swing until Saturday, April16.
EARTH kicked off the week with a Fun Run at 9 a.m. The 6K Fun Run was very successful. Participants paid $5 each and all of it was donated to EARTH. Prizes were raffled at the end of the event. Prizes included Calvillo’s dinners, water bottles, and gift cards to Kristi Mountain Sports and Cattail’s Golf Course. The Fun Run was something for everyone; participants were encouraged to walk if they needed and also to bring their pets along for the stroll.
That same morning was the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle garage sale. It started at 9 a.m. and lasted until 12 p.m. It was located in the Student Union Building Mall Court. Students also met up at 11 a.m. in the SUB Mall Court to help with a clean-up of the Rio Grande River near the north end of campus.
On Wednesday, April 13, there will be a keynote speaker, Dr. Karel Rogers whose lecture “Thinking Green: A Biologist’s View of Current Economic, Social, and Environmental Issues” will be held at 7 p.m. in Porter Hall room 130 and is co-sponsored by the Colorado Field Institute. Rogers will discuss how human beings and their activities are a part of the natural world, but humans have been ignoring nature’s rules, which has led to our current problems like global warming, budget deficits, unending war, the obesity epidemic, the economic meltdown, and global biodiversity loss. This event is open to the public
An environmental movie night is set up for Friday, April 15, in Porter Hall room 130 at 5:45 p.m. Three movies will be shown. “Fresh” is a movie about the consequences of industrial food production; “Gasland” is an expose of natural gas drilling in the US; and “Split Estate” documents average Colorado citizens trying to cope with natural gas drilling literally in their back yards. The film “Fresh” is sponsored by the Local Foods Coalition and “Split Estate” is sponsored by ASC Community Partnerships. This event is free and open to the public.
In celebration of free National Park Week, EARTH and the Colorado Field Institute are coordinating a guided hike at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, taking advantage of free admission. Interested hikers should meet at the Park’s Visitor Center by 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, April 16. This event is free and open to the general public.
Be sure to take advantage of all that EARTH week has to offer. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the environment while getting to know your fellow schoolmates and learning how to better the earth. For more information call 719-587-7741.
