Did you find moving into your dorm room stressful? Do you despise the day you have to move again? Didn’t it suck lugging your things up three flights of stairs, knowing that in a few months it’s all coming back down? If so, you’re not alone!
A Tennessee based company now operates in 48 cities, charging $70 an hour to move college students into their dorm rooms, in one single day. I’m sitting here thinking, are you kidding me?! Seventy bucks an hour to move people’s things up and down the stairs! That’s a lot of cash to be made, but also a lot of physical labor.
Many colleges have volunteers to help students move in, Adams doesn’t; or at least I’ve never seen them. This company comes in and does the heavy lifting for you. Moving day is already hectic enough, with hundreds of students moving in on the same day and at the same time, plus not having elevators to help do the lifting, can cause stress for anyone.
Moving day usually happens at the start of the semester and the end of the semester- minus the few moves a student might make in between. Campus Bellhops (the company name) was started by two college students who recently graduated. They figured it’d be a semi-annual business to help ease the transition to and from campus living.
At first they started by recruiting their local students and from campus organizations. Obviously it was a hit! The company now operates in 48 cities and helps students everywhere. The company is based in Chattanooga, Tennessee but makes most of its moves in Blacksburg, VA (Virginia Tech), Birmingham, AL (Stamford, University of Alabama Birmingham), Athens, GA (University of Georgia), and State College, PA (Penn State). Other companies offer similar services in the areas as well.
The service doesn’t come cheap but satisfied companies say it’s worth it. Many students use their services because of things like: being moved to the third floor and the school has no elevators, parents or friends can’t help them move, family has trouble going up and down the stairs, it would take more than a day to move everything or things are just too heavy for them to do on their own.
The company specializes in small and medium sized moves where you don’t need guys with 20 plus years’ experience, you just need some great, strong, clean cut guys who you trust to help you move your things.
With that being said, movers can have a stigma placed on them and with the company now operating in 48 cities, I’m not sure they know every person working for them and how trust worthy they really are. Overall the reviews are good! Students love how positive and efficient the movers are.
Many people say they are helpful and happy to move what others can’t. Seeing as they make $70 an hour, I’d hope so! I wonder if Adams would ever get a program like this going.
