ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Wrapping up their 3-game swing in the Show Me State, the ASC men’s lacrosse team saw Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) score eight unanswered goals between the start of the second and start of the fourth quarters, and were able to muster just a pair of goals in suffering a 2-14 loss against the Cardinals at Harlan C. Hunter Stadium.
With the loss, ASC falls to 5-7 on the season and has now dropped two straight games. For the Cardinals, the win ended a 7-game losing streak and upped their record to 5-8 this season.
WJU wasted no time in grabbing a 2-0 lead over ASC, as Austin Grimes opened the scoring just 10 seconds after the game began, and Tyler Buchan found the net at the 14:00 mark.
The rest of the quarter was comparatively silent, and the Grizzlies trailed by just one, 1-2, heading into the second thanks to a goal at the 9:55 mark from sophomore Bryden Pelletier (Lantzville, B.C., Canada), assisted by junior Kevin Bertrand (Steamboat Springs, Colo.).
But more than 30 minutes of game time would pass before the Grizzlies struck again, when sophomore Brian Bertrand (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) found sophomore Anthony Damico (Littleton, Colo.) for a goal with 9:42 left in the fourth to cut the ASC deficit to 2-10.
Between ASC goals Wheeling Jesuit scored five unanswered in the second quarter, added two in the third and found the net with 13:39 left in the game.
Buchanan and Landon DelPrince each netted three for the Cardinals, while Johnson and Brian Frank scored two apiece. WJU out-shot Adams State 35-19 in the contest. ASC made a fourth-quarter comeback effort, but WJU keeper Joe Amsler recorded four saves in the final quarter to keep the Grizzlies well at bay.
Adams State will return home for its season finale next Saturday to host Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA) foe Colorado Mesa. The two faced off earlier this season in Grand Junction, where the Grizzlies suffered a 3-10 loss.
The final game of 2012 season for ASC will get underway beginning at 1 p.m. at ASC Lacrosse Field. Grizzly fans unable to make the trip to Alamosa can follow the action via live stats.
