Athlete of the Week: September 9

Jessica Hellweg

Adams State College junior forward on the women’s soccer team, Jessica Hellweg has been named as the ASCGrizzlies.com/Paw Print Athlete of the Week for week ending on Sept. 5.
In the Grizzlies season-opener on Friday against CSU-Pueblo, Hellweg tallied three points, scoring the first goal of the season for Adams State to grab a 1-0 lead, and then got the assist on the freshman Whitney Smith game-winning goal just minutes before halftime.
Hellweg’s goal came at the 34:19 mark following an Adams State corner kick, where she struck the ball off the bounce to put the Grizzlies on the board.
Just six minutes later, Hellweg took a shot that was blocked by the ThunderWolves, but Smith was in the right spot and managed to redirect the ball into the net and give Hellweg credit for the assist.
Hellweg again put ASC on top Sunday afternoon as the Grizzlies hosted Midland Lutheran (Neb.) at Murphy Field. After dribbling towards the middle of the field from the right sideline, Hellweg delivered a strike from 25 yards out.
Hellweg led the Grizzlies offense with three shots Sunday, including two on goal, but was unable to find the net again as ASC fell to the Warriors.
The two goals, one assist opening weekend moved Hellweg up in the ASC record books. With two goals, Hellweg has upped her career total to 10, giving sole possession of fifth-place on the Grizzlies’ all-time list. In addition, her five points for the weekend gives her a career total of 23, the sixth best mark in program history.
The ASCGrizzlies.com/Paw Print Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Despite gaining the least amount of votes on the ASCGrizzlies.com poll, Hellweg got the most votes among ASC administrators and local media memebers.
Other players in contention for the award this week were Hawken Hanna of the men’s soccer program, Deprece Washington of the volleyball team,, and James Ackel of the football team.
