On the heels of a Division II leading 4 minute, 5.06 second mile at the Univ. of New Mexico Cherry & Silver Invitational on Saturday, Adams State sophomore Craig Huffer has been named as the ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award for the week ending Jan. 23.
In addition to his ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week honor, Huffer was also named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Huffer’s time was a NCAA Division II National Championships automatic qualifier even before the altitude adjustment. The unadjusted time also broke the previous arena record at the Albuquerque Convention Center, which was held by 2-time NCAA Division I indoor mile champion Lee Emmanuel of UNM.
The performance also ranks sixth in the nation over all divisions, and is a full three seconds faster than the number two D-II time this year. With the altitude adjustment, Huffer’s time was the arena’s first-ever sub-4:00 mile.
The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC athletic administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Huffer finished in second on the online vote with 26.7 percent of the 86 votes that were cast. 26.9 percent of the votes were given to Janelle Higgs of the women’s swimming team.
Huffer nabbed three first place votes while Kendra Coveal of the women’s basketball team and Luke McPeek of the wrestling team each got two votes.
Jack Osborn, LeErin Wilson, Cody Robson, Brandon Lutz and Kristen McGlynn were also nominated.
