The Adams State College Career and Learning Center held a very successful career fair on Thursday, March 4. Twenty-three employers from the Valley were present with businesses ranging all the way up to the federal level of employment. Victoria Flores form the Career Center said that these career fairs are very useful for students because it allows them to “mentally transfer their degrees into careers.”
Due to the recession this year, a greater number of employers from the Valley attended the fair than from any other location. They offered jobs, internships, careers, and seasonal work. Places like Wal-mart and Maurices from the Valley were present and loved the response from the ASC students. Thirty minutes into the career fair, Maurices already had several potential employees. Some companies had traveled all the way from Taos, New Mexico to recruit students from New Mexico to come back to their home state after graduation. They felt that by giving students the opportunity return home it would, these students could greatly help their community.
The Department of State and the FBI was present also. The Department of State was recruiting for internships in Washington D.C. and even overseas. They were looking for no specific type of student, but rather would like as much diversity in their program as possible which is the reason they recruit at both large and small colleges.
Adams State Business Graduate Program was even present at this year’s career fair. Their message was that the real world is tough and that the more education a student can get the easier entering into the work force will be. They were also promoting their new MBA program which is now attainable in five years.
The student’s response to the career fair was phenomenal. Early on, participation was seen by several enthusiastic students. Trevor Tuner said that he liked going to the career fair because “I graduate in May so I’m getting kicked out into the real world.” Another student, Josh Copelan, said that the career fair is “very informative and helpful for kids like me who have no idea what they want to do.”
Both students and employers appreciated the career fair because it showed students what jobs are available and employers what students are looking for in a job.
