What event has a myriad of booths, drums pounding out an especially upbeat background rhythm, and more food than you can shake a stick at? No it’s not the Colorado State Fair it’s the Adams State College Volunteer Fair.
The Volunteer fair is an annual event held by the ASC Cares. The ASC Cares group encourages and participates in community service projects all over the valley. In addition to community service, the Volunteer Fair also helps to raise money for the various clubs that Adams State College has to offer.
The sound of drums prevailed over the crowd and other booths. Several drum musicians were there to serenade students and volunteers. The drums and drummers were compliments of the percussion studio. The underlying theme of the Volunteer Fair was of Hispanic heritage; the food and music illustrated this the most. This was fitting considering that it is Hispanic Heritage Month.
The turnout was fantastic. There were many clubs, as well as, non-profit organizations present. Some of the groups present include PSI CHI The National Honor Society of Psychology, ASC Sci/Fi and Fantasy Guild, ASC Music Club, El Parnaso Spanish Club, the Welcome Community Organization, The San Luis Valley Prevention Coalition against Drugs and Alcohol, the Adams State Adventure Program, Local Food Coalition, La Puente Home, San Luis Valley Habitat for Humanity, The San Luis Valley Humane League, and the San Luis Valley Women’s Resource Center.
The booths were indeed numerous, which gives insight into the various different activities and clubs that can be found at Adams State College. ASC Cares was present with a booth encouraging students to sign up for the lists of volunteer projects that ASC Cares is involved in. The ASC Cares project cumulates this weekend on Saturday, October 2 in the ASC Cares Plunge. The ASC Plunge is the actual beginning of the community service projects that they are involved in.
A major participant in the fair is The San Luis Valley Prevention Coalition. Ruben Graciano, Prevention Specialist for the SLV Prevention Coalition, is also part of the ASC Care Committee and helped organize the event. According to Mr. Graciano the ASC Cares committee met for two months to organize the event. “It helps to get other students involved in their community. ASC Cares, along with the other community service organizations, are committed to helping to improve the San Luis Valley Community.” Mr. Graciano says.
What is a fair without delicious food? Almost all of the booths present had some treat to offer. A fajita table filled the air with the delicious smell of fajita steak. In addition there was also coffee, provided by That Coffee Guy, homemade chili rellenos, a make-your-own trail mix table, nachos, cotton candy, and a grab-bag of candy treats.
The main attractions to students were the dunking booth, the fajita table, and the dogs that the SLV Humane League had brought. The puppies and fajitas proved irresistible to students.
Without question the Volunteer Fair was successful in getting students attention and making them aware that they can help their community, as well as, dine on excellent food and have a good time.
