The Adams State men’s soccer team, coached by first-year head coach Tim Busen, started off the 2010 season slow with a 0-2 record in nonconference play over the past weekend. The young team fell short of the Mesa State College Mavericks, as they lost the season-opening match 6-0 before dropping a 4-1 game to the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds on Sunday.
On September 5 the Grizzlies took on the Mavericks from Mesa State College at Murphy Field. The Grizzlies couldn’t get anything going offensively, allowing the Mavericks three goals in the first half of play. The game concluded with the Mavericks on top with a cumulative total of four goals and the Grizzlies trailing behind with one.
The Grizzlies lone goal was scored by freshman Hawken Hanna from Haslett High School (Mich.), early in the second half. Hanna took control of the ball, dribbling past a Maverick defender and past Mesa State’s goalie, Billy Martinez.
After a quick turn around goal from Danny Molineaux of the Mavericks, the Grizzlies then held Mesa State to no score after 10 minutes into the second half.
Freshman goalie from Alamosa High School, Paul Pizza, contributed to the team by saving four of the eight shots that the Mavericks took at the Grizzlies goal.
Pizza played all 90 minutes of the competition as goalkeeper for the Grizzlies. Freshman Chris Roggow from Evergreen High School was the leader in shot attempts for the Grizzlies with two shots total and one on the goal. He was followed by fellow freshman Hanna, Xzavier Phare from Cherry Creek High School, Henry Stewart from Mayfield High School and junior Joseph Jallow from Gambia Methodist Academy.
At Murphy Field on September 3 Adams State faced the Greyhounds from Eastern New Mexico University.
Eight of the eleven starters for Adams State were freshman. Adams State lost to the experienced Greyhound’s from EMSU 6 to 0.
Freshman forward, Phare, took the first shot for ASC, but a defender from ENMU blocked it.
Also a freshman, forward Roggow took three shots getting them all on goal, but still could not get the ball in the net.
Another newcomer from Ralston Valley High School, Dillon Lee, a keeper for the Grizzlies started the game. He played the whole first half saving two shots and only allowing two goals. Pizza took over the net in the second half, where he accumulated a total of four saves and only allowing four goals for the Greyhounds.
The Grizzlies have a busy schedule this fall. Their next game will be when they travel to Pueblo to play Montana State-Billings on September 13 at Rawlings Soccer Complex.
Then the Grizzlies will start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on September 17 facing the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves at Murphy Field at 12:30. They then will play Colorado Christian at Murphy Field on September 19 at 12:30.
The team will take on number one ranked Fort Lewis at Murphy Field on September 24 at 3:00.
