On Saturday, April 24, the ASC men and women track teams traveled to Fort Collins for the Jack Christiansen Invitational hosted by Colorado State University. The Grizzlies saw a fair amount of success at the meet even though both teams were competing with reduced numbers as many of the athletes took the weekend off.
On the men’s side, Pierce Fair took fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.28 seconds and teammate Michael Geiger was seventh (15.28). Justin Cropper was the top Grizzly in the 200-meters with a seventh place finish in 22.13 followed in the incredibly close field by Joseph Jallow in sixteenth (22.98). Jallow returned with a sixteenth place finish in the 400-meters, running 53.24.
In the 800-meters, senior Ryan McNiff won the race with a time of 1 minute 53 seconds over Mathew Biegner of the University of Colorado (1:54). Florian Theophile ran 4:03 to place sixth in the 1500-meter run.
In the field events, Daniel Maldonado placed second in the shot put with a throw of 54 ft. 6 in which hit the provisional qualifying standard for DII Nationals. Miquel Narez took eighth (48 ft. 6 in). Jake Santerre claimed the top spot for the men in the discus throw with a mark of 146 ft. 7 in. which was good enough for eleventh place. Brady Schreibvogel finished sixteenth with throw of 141 ft. 11 in. Maldonado returned in the hammer throw to place sixth with a best of 171 ft. 4 in. while Schreibvogel rounded out the top ten with a mark of 155 ft. 6 in.
Jason Mannerberg took second in the long jump with a leap of 22 ft. 4 inches. Fair returned in the triple jump with a fourth place finish after jumping 22 ft. 6 in. In the pole vault, Blair Sohl cleared 15 ft. 3 in. which was good for a third place finish.
For the women, Renee Harris placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.44 seconds. Jazmine Ralph took eighth in the 100-meter dash, running 12.43 and returned in the 200-meteres with an improved fifth place finish in 25.83.
In the 800-meter run, Anna Dean placed fourth and Tanisha Thomas took eleventh with times of 2:29 and 2:36, respectively. Senior Janette Cary placed sixth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:54.
The women put together two strong relays for the day, claiming first place in both the 4×100-meters and the 4×400-meters. The 4×100-meter team of Lindsey Grasmick, Indira Spence, Ralph, and Amanda Doyle won their event in 47.82 a second ahead of Colorado State’s team which finished in 48.73. In the 4×400-meters, Grasmick and Spence were joined by Cassie Mitchell and Alicia Nelson for a five second victory (3:54) over the University of Colorado (3:59).
In the throwing events, Tamara Fowler place third in the shot put with a toss of 43 ft. 1 in. Jenna Bohnen, Kelsey Huckle, and Catrina Donley finished eighth (40ft.), tenth (37 ft. 3 in.), and twelfth (36 ft. 2 in.) respectively. Bohnen returned in the discus throw for a fifth place finish (134 ft. 10 in.) and a seventh place finish in the discus (150 ft. 1 in.) Teammate Huckle placed twelfth in the hammer with a mark of 136 ft. 1 in. In the javelin throw, Doyle placed second (136 ft. 1 in.) while Harris finished ninth (101 ft. 11 in.) Doyle’s mark hit the NCCA Division II provisional qualifying standard for the event.
In the pole vault, Annelise Pradal placed third after clearing 12 ft. 2 in. a mark which broke her own school record of 11 feet 7 ¾ inches. Pradal’s personal best also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II National Championship. Doyle and Harris both competed in the long jump and finished fourth (18 ft.) and fifth (17 ft. 7 in.) respectively.
Next weekend the Grizzlies will again split their squad. Several athletes will be traveling to the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford while the rest of the team will be traveling to the University of New Mexico to compete in the Don Kirby Memorial Invitational.
