ASU Baseball: Grizzlies get the broom for second straight series

GOLDEN, Colo. – Adams State Baseball suffers sweep to Colorado School of Mines on the road over the weekend. The Grizzlies fall to 6-24 on the season and are now 3-13 in the RMAC.

The story of the weekend was the bats of the Orediggers, who finished the series with a total of 40 runs on 55 hits in four games. The pitching staff of the Grizzlies just could not keep the home team from crossing home plate.

In the opening game of the series, the Orediggers scored 22 runs on 24 hits which left starting pitcher David Maldonado of Adams State, to take the game one loss, which puts him to 2-6 on the season. The Orediggers had three different players with four RBIs each. Despite suffering a 19 run loss, the lone good sign was in redshirt junior outfielder, Nico Nintze, who batted in the Grizzlies’ only three runs with a home run in the top of the sixth inning. Nintze went on to lead the Grizzlies on the weekend with six total hits as he accounted for 30% of their hits.

In game #2, senior Daniel Brennan got the nod to start the newly changed nine-inning game that took place Saturday. A double header was set in place originally but due to inclement weather, only one nine-inning game was to be played. The score was tied 1-1 up until the fourth inning as the Orediggers scored five unanswered runs to take a 6-1 lead. Adams State scored three runs in the final inning but still came up short as the ultimately dropped game two, 4-10.

Fast-forward 24 hours for a double header on Sunday afternoon.  Game #3 had junior pitcher Troy Gutbub on the hill for the Grizzlies. Gutbub fanned six Orediggers over six complete innings but was still handed the loss which puts him two wins under .500 for the year. The Grizzlies struggled putting runners on base as they tallied only four hits which resulted in two runs, ultimately falling 7-2. In game two of the double header, and final game of the series, starting pitcher Dalton Carleo was fantastic, striking out six in just 3.2 innings pitched. A pitchers’ duel, that saw under ten hits combined, left the teams in a chess game. Colorado School of Mines comes away victorious in the end as they win game four, 3-1.

Adams State Baseball returns home next weekend as they continue RMAC play with a four game series set to begin April 5th against UCCS.
