Guest Percussion Concert Is March 12

ALAMOSA (March 4) – Alex Weir, who has presented solo recitals at numerous universities around the U.S. and is a member of the percussion trio Atlas Percussion, will perform at a guest percussion concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in Adams State University Leon Memorial Hall.

Wier is a percussionist active as both a performer and educator. He has performed with the Phoenix Symphony, Grand Teton Music Festival, Tucson Symphony, Arizona Opera, Omaha Symphony, Arizona Musicfest Festival Orchestra, Crested Butte Music Festival, and at the 2006 Percussive Arts Society International Convention with the University of Arizona Steel Band.

As a teacher, Wier has taught students of all ages and directed indoor and outdoor percussion programs at several high schools in Arizona. He currently is the instructor of the Percussion Methods course and undergraduate percussion lessons at Arizona State University as a teaching assistant and is adjunct faculty at Phoenix College teaching Jazz History and Rock History in-person and online.

Wier has also helped found percussion groups in Chicago and Tucson that were focused on community outreach and has been in-demand in Arizona as a clinician and adjudicator. He served as president of the Arizona Percussive Arts Society from 2012 to 2013. Wier is currently completing a doctor of musical arts degree at Arizona State University and holds a master of music degree from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona.

He has also been the recipient of several grants and scholarships that assisted in funding his collegiate studies and attendance at various seminars around the United States, in addition to studying abroad in Ghana, Africa in 2006.
