Oct. 1 meeting at Adams State University
ALAMOSA, CO. (Sept. 18, 2014) . . . The Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) is holding a public meeting about a new funding formula for Colorado public higher education in Alamosa. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Adams State University’s Student Union Building first floor banquet rooms (First St.). The public is welcome and encouraged to attend and share their concerns.
“Community input from San Luis Valley residents is especially important, so that Adams State University receives a fair share of future state funding for higher education,” noted Adams State President David Svaldi. “In addition to offering a high quality, affordable higher education, Adams State is also important to our area’s economic health and cultural enhancement.”
The meeting will solicit feedback on the community’s priorities for higher education, economic and workforce development needs, and investment in the future of Colorado. Earlier this year the Colorado legislature passed and Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law House Bill 14-1319, which charges the (CCHE) with developing a new base funding formula to allocate state general fund dollars among the state’s public institutions of higher education.
The CCHE must also recommend tuition policies that ensure both accessible and affordable higher education for Colorado residents. The new funding model will be implemented in the 2015-16 academic year. The meetings, to be held across the state, are facilitated by the Keystone Center and Engaged Public. The CCHE wants to hear from students, parents, higher education faculty, administrators, and staff, representatives from K-12, business leaders, elected officials, and others interested in higher education in Colorado within the context of what the bill requires. Input from the regional outreach meetings will be synthesized and shared with the CCHE to help inform the design of the new base funding formula.
