On Saturday night, Adams State University’s men’s basketball team shined great light defensively after shooting down Regis University 91-59 in Plachy Hall. Scoring a career high 18 points, junior, Jaree Crawford; Gary, In., covered the court for the grizzlies in just 21 minutes. Crawford, who recorded 2 tremendous steals from the weakened Rangers, was also 2-2 from the arc, and added 8-14 field goals with 1 assist. He is currently the 27th best scorer in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), a score that puts him at the top of the Grizzly chart at an average of 11.4.
Joining Crawford in the doubled figure category was the junior from Seattle, Juwann Buchanan. Wearing number 55, the Rangers could not get a grip of Buchanan’s white ASU jersey as he slam dunked 12 points into the basket. Playing for a low 10 minutes, Buchanan captured 1 block, 1 steal, and 1 assist which helped sored the Grizzlies to a comfortable win. DeQuan Jones; Brooklyn, New York, tallied 8 points in 22 minutes and only made two of five three-point shots. Julian Scott; Sacramento, Calif., also logged 8 points. Recorded
The rebound king, Mike Hemsley, crushed the court in his eighteen minute conquest. Hemsley; Washington, D.C., only scored 7 points but showed great effort on the defensive side. He leads the Grizzlies’ in rebounds and sits eighth on the RMAC list. Other team effort came from the skilled three-point, Justin Kauffman. Kauffman; Anchorage, Alaska, was 2-3 from the arc. He recorded 1 assist, 1 turnover, and 1 steal. Another 6 points was added from the 5’ 8” junior out of Atlanta, Rodney Nelson. Nelson swiftly picked up the pace for the Grizzlies in the second half, playing hard on defense and leaving room for his teammates to take the ball to the basket. A shared five points came from the great early-season scorers, Chuck Cole and Mikey Hope. Both Cole and Hope played 7 and 14 minutes respectively.
Plachy Hall shook when 4 points came from the ASU center, Okeuchukwu Arnold. The Grizzly supporters stumped their feet and roared in glory as Arnold sunk the ball in the basket. It was the first time Arnold had scored over two pints. Lee Lark and Julian Wheeler also took 4 points to the basket. The Grizzly captain, Ozelle Jamestown, and the ASU guard, Kenny Morgan, added 2 points each.
Over the Christmas break, the Grizzlies played six RMAC teams. They won four of those games and lost two. Their most impressive score was 100-73 in the game against Western New Mexico University. A close game between the Grizzlies and New Mexico Highlands (87-90) ended with the Grizzlies losing to the Cowboys in the last three minutes of play. Another close game was between the Grizzlies and Colorado Mesa University. The Grizzlies could only score 73 points, while the Mavericks scored 75.
This Friday, the Grizzlies will travel to Golden for a matchup with Colorado School of Mines. Then on Saturday, they will face Colorado Christian University in Lakewood. To date, ASU stands 5-6 in the conference and 8-6 overall.
