The life-size bronze statue of Coach Joe Vigil sustained minor damage last week when police and other first responders arrived to handle an explosive device outside Adams State University’s Rex Stadium. The statue was knocked off of its pedestal when a city police car accidentally backed into it, according to a report from the Colorado State Patrol. The statue landed on the roof of the police car but was removed, and the car could be driven from the scene. The City of Alamosa will pay for the repair and reinstallation of the monument.
The statue of Vigil, created by sculptor Emanuel Martinez, was commissioned and installed in front of the Rex Stadium three years ago through the efforts of a group of Adams State alumni who felt privileged to have been coached, instructed, and inspired by the legendary Adams State and USA Olympics coach. Eight law enforcement units and three fire service units were called to the scene Oct. 25 and subsequently safely detonated a device following a Grizzly football game.
