ALAMOSA, CO. (Sept. 18, 2013) . . . Adams State University President, David Svaldi, recently appointed Professor Margaret Doell as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. She will serve half-time in that role for this academic year, while continuing her duties as chair of the Art Department. As assistant to Dr. Frank Novotny, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Doell will oversee the budgets for adjunct faculty and summer school, working closely with the department chairs. Doell recently completed a one-year American Council on Education (ACE) Fellowship at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS). The prestigious ACE Fellowship program requires institutions to provide additional administrative duties to the Fellow upon completion of the Fellowship. Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program strengthens institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration.”The year as an ACE Fellow highlighted for me the extensive challenges facing higher education, especially in regards to the long-term fiscal viability of small institutions like ASU,” Doell said. “The opportunity to observe Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak for a year at UCCS also stressed the importance of effective communication to a wide variety of stakeholders, both on and off campus. I hope to model as best I can her example of relationship building, communication, and planning.”Doell’s Fellowship year involved extensive campus observations of the leadership team at UCCS, as well as four ACE retreats emphasizing issues in higher education and campus visits to institutions across the country. “As part of my Fellowship, I worked on two projects, one for ASU and one for UCCS. For UCCS I researched funding models for public partnerships specific to joint ventures involving building a visual and performing arts center. I also identified state and national grants that might be a good match for such a project. For ASU I studied shared governance, including visits to other campuses, observations at UCCS, extensive reading, and interviews at both ASU and UCCS,” Doell said. Her resulting report gave an overview of shared governance practices nationally, a summary of results of the ASU survey, and a series of recommendations for ASU. The report was shared with the Adams State president and his executive team, as well as the Faculty Senate president. Doell joined the Adams State Art Department Faculty in 1996 and assumed leadership of the department in 2003. In 2011, the Adams State Associated Students & Faculty presented her with its award for Excellence in Student Engagement. In 2006-07, Doell served three semesters as ASC’s interim assistant provost for Academic Affairs. In 2010, she attended the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Leadership Institute at the University of Denver. This intensive two-week institute delved into most aspects of higher education administration, including but not limited to: budgeting, conflict resolution, first generation students, diversity, and different administrative roles in higher education. Doell has also taught at University College of the Cariboo (now Thompson Rivers University), Kamloops, British Columbia; Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, and Concordia University in Montreal. Doell’s work is included in several private and corporate collections, and she has exhibited in many solo and group shows. In 1989, Doell earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in photography from the University of Manitoba, Canada, then spent a year as resident artist in printmaking at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta before completing her Master’s of Fine Arts in printmaking from Concordia University in 1993. She also holds a number of certificates in digital photography from Maine Media Workshops.
