Danish researchers have begun new human trials of a vaccine that they hope may prove to be a cure for the “Human Immunodeficiency Virus” known as HIV. According to the Huffington Post, results from the testing are expected within months.
A cure has proven extremely difficult hitherto, due to the defense mechanism HIV enacts by retreating deep into the reservoirs of human DNA.
The Danish team has already reported success in laboratory testing of human cells. The Telegraph notes, “The technique involves unmasking the ‘reservoirs’ formed by the HIV virus inside resting immune cells, bringing it to the surface of the cells.”
This news comes on the heels of Canada’s Western University claiming a massive clinical testing success with their own HIV vaccine.
South Korean backer Jung-Gee Cho reports, “We are opening the gate to pharmaceutical companies, government, and charity organizations for collaboration to be one step closer to the first commercialized HIV vaccine.”
As both teams of researchers creep closer to being able to mass produce a vaccine, Amanda Chan of the Huffington Post reported earlier this year that fourteen adults have already been functionally cured of HIV. The fourteen, who are being observed, still have trace amounts of the virus, but only detectable with precision medical equipment. They join the company of a Mississippi girl who was also declared functionally cured earlier this year.
Dr. Hannah Gay told CNN that the key to the girl’s cure may not have be so much the particular drug or amount of drug, but the exceptionally early timing in which the infant received the medication. The cumulative momentum of these discoveries has prompted some to preemptively whisper of a HIV cure within months. Kevin Frost, CEO of the Foundation for AIDS Research cautions, “There is still a lot of work that has to be done,” and “It is very risky business to try and predict the pace of scientific research.”
While the results of research and trials are still months away, success seems possible if not imminent. Many are hopeful that the cure for HIV may be just within our reach.
