ASU Track and Field Has Successful Meet Saturday

Kayon Robinson put on stellar performance for the Grizzlies this past Saturday and proudly led the Adams State University track and field team towards the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championship.
On game day, Robinson recorded a national leading time of 23.45 seconds in the women’s 200m and ran a superb second leg on the women’s 4x100m team, along with a rocket start from Zenobia Sims, a great curve run from Chelsea Fenderson, and a terrific anchor leg by Sunayna Wahi. The team ran 45.71 seconds and is now fifth on the national list.
Wahi and Fenderson also showed in the sprint races. Fenderson finished the women’s 100m in 12.41 seconds and the 200m in 25.67. Wahi completed her day in the 200m as well, clocking 24.88 seconds.
Ackiesha Burnett was also at work in the women’s 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 14.19 seconds. Kelli Williams cleared her hurdles in a 16.20 finish and in the 400m hurdles, she hit 11.11.56. Alicia Nelson and Alyssa Selve performed magnificently in the 1500m when they crossed the tape in 4.27.68 and 4.27.86, and are now sitting third and fourth on the NCAA national list.
The women were joined by Kelly Lamb in 4.33.37, the twelfth spot on the list. Jessie Brunett and Gylanny Crossman failed to hit the provisional qualifying mark but are off to a great start with their times of 4.45.92 and 4.52.51.
Crossman was fourth in the women’s 3000m in a time of 10.54.67. Nelson, Selve, and Lamb returned to the 800m and clocked 2.15.78, 2.21.25, and 2.21.55. Taylor Warren was also in that race and finished in 2.19.09.
In the men’s 800m, Jacob Ruder, Stephen Emery, Steve Lezama, and Martin Sanchez raced to 1.53.11, 1.53.19, 1.54.72, and 1.57.86. Rider’s time, converted to 1.52.44, was the only one making the national list. In the men’s 3000m run, Jake Krolick won in 8.57.18, and unattached ASU athlete Quin Ralston ran 9.10.08.
Tabor Stevens was the man to watch in the men’s 1500m, as he led the pack from the get-go and finished in 3.45.90. Andrew Robert’s 3.59.98, John Acuna’s 4.01.40, Alec Neson’s 4.01.96, and John Luterbach’s 4.07.49 were good enough for third, fifth, ninth and eleventh in that race.
The men’s 110m hurdles were led by Aaron Williams who finished third overall, clocking a season best of 14.81 seconds. Michael Geiger, Tyler Zito and Quinton Johnson clocked 15.37. 15.71 and 16.54 respectively. ASU soccer player Brooke Dudley ran a personal best time of 1.07.16 in the women’s 400m dash.
On the men’s side, Derek Brown and Nathan Bolivar both ran the 400m and clocked 49.24 and 50.76 to finish fifth and twelfth overall. A big time personal best from Chaz Butler in the men’s 100m dash fired up the Grizzlies for the upcoming RMAC championship.
Butler clocked 10.39 seconds for third while Jurgen Themen, Williams, and Charles Miler clocked 10.63, 11.02 and 11.12. Geiger and Johnson also clocked 11.46 and 11.80 to complete the heat. Themen, Brown, Miller and Bolivar completed their day in 21.45, 21.57, 22.44, and 22.72 respectively.
The men’s steeple chase was done by Kyle Masterson, Nate Jones and Zach Ellis. The three hustled to 9.35.93, 9.46.49, and 10.14.64 seconds finish, with Masterson’s time converting to 9.20.49, booking him a spot on the national list.
For the women, Melissa Roberts was second in her race, clocking 11.48.10. Lindsay Jantzi leaped to a 4.66 meter jump in the women’s long jump and Justin Bethea was awarded another win in the men’s high jump when he cleared 2.03 meters.
Another win came from Katie Kruger in the women’s discus throw. Kruger dropped the discus at the 35.57m mark and her teammate, Angelica Payton, threw 29.95m. Wesley Lavong also took the number one spot in the men’s discus throw when he threw 46.04m. Zach Baxter and Joe Hochanadel were second and third with distances of 41.38m and 40.11m.
The Grizzlies will travel to Canyon, Texas for the West Texas A&M Open on May 13, their third meet of the outdoor season.
