PUEBLO, Colo. – Senior Indira Spence (Trelawny, Jamaica) was an individual automatic qualifier on the Saturday’s final day of action the Colorado State-Pueblo Invitational in the 100 meter hurdles, and helped the ASC 4×100 meter relay squad to an automatic mark as well as the Grizzlies wrapped up action at the ThunderBowl.
The trip was the second of the season to the ThunderBowl for ASC after appearing at the CSU-Open in March. The Grizzlies will make the drive up I-25 to Pueblo one more time this season, to return for the May 24-26 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Spence, who represented Jamaica in the 100 meter hurdles at last summer’s IAAF World Championships, set a new stadium record in the event with a winning time of 13.39 seconds (13.43 adjusted), a mark that currently ranks second in the country.
Teammate and countrywoman Kaymarie Jones (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) placed second with a time of 13.71 seconds (13.75 adjusted), a provisional qualifier that ties for the fifth fastest time in DII this season.
In the 4×100 meter relay, Spence led off a team that included Kayon Robinson (Clarendon, Jamaica), Chelsea Fenderson (Aurora, Colo.) and was anchored by Jones, for a winning and automatic qualifying time of 45.52 seconds (45.64 adjusted). The time was also a ThunderBowl record for the quartet.
Robinson was also an individual provisional qualifier in Saturday’s 400 meter dash, posting an event winning and ThunderBowl record time of 54.74 seconds (54.85 adjusted).
Sims ran her way to a provisional time of 11.79 seconds (11.82 adjusted) in the 100 meter dash.
The final qualifying performance on the track for the Grizzly women came from senior Lindsey Grasmick (Fowler, Colo.). She recorded a provisional mark for the second time this spring with a 400 meter hurdles time of 1:01.61 (1:00.72 adjusted), but was unable to dip under her season best time.
The women’s 1500 meter race saw Adams State claim a 1-2 finish. Junior Teri Mitchell (Tustin, Calif.) led the field with a time of 4:59.39 (4:53.38 adjusted), while freshman Melissa Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) finished as runner-up in 5:01.64 (4:55.58 adjusted).
A pair of throwers put up provisional marks in the shot put. Sophomore Katie Kruger (Alamosa, Colo.) reached the standard for the third time this season, but topped her prior marks with a toss of 13.81 meters (45’3 ¾”) which was good for the win. Freshman Julia Costin (Parker, Colo.) had her first qualifying mark in the shot put, placing second behind Kruger with a distance of 13.40 meters (43’11 ¾”).
For freshman Kris-Ann Walters (Kingston, Jamaica), her provisional mark in the triple jump Saturday was also her second of the season, and was also her best as she reached a distance of 11.76 meters (38’7”) for third place.
A busy weekend await ASC next weekend as the squad will take part in three events, including the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State in Norwalk, Calif., and the Western State Open in Gunnison, Colo.
