After taking both games yesterday, the Grizzlies split Saturday’s doubleheader with Colorado Christian University losing 3-5 in the day’s opener, before winning game two in dramatic fashion on a ninth inning RBI single from sophomore catcher DJ Consonero (Pueblo, Colo.).
ASC stays in the middle of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) pack, at a steady 15-15 in league play and 19-19 overall. The Grizzlies are now at .500 following a weekend for the first time since February. CCU stays in a tie for fourth place in the RMAC with an 18-12 league mark.
The Cougars starter for game one, Genevieve Reyna, held the Grizzlies in check, pitching a complete game for her 15th win of the season.
ASC freshman starter Kelsey Sellars (Denver, Colo.) also went the distance, and even gave up less earned runs than Reyna, but the ASC defense committed two errors which led to three unearned runs. Sellars also struck out three Cougars and walked none.
Senior third baseman Rebecca Lindquist (Fort Collins, Colo.) provided a good portion of the Grizzlies’ offense in game one, driving in two runs, with a 2-out single in the third inning.
Consonero doubled in the fourth and freshman second baseman Symone Loomis-Dotson (Longmont, Colo.) followed with a triple, knocking in Consonero. Loomis-Dotson and Consonero were both 1-for-3 in the first game.
However, the errors were the undoing of the Grizzlies, affording the Cougars a few extra at-bats to build a lead, and the Grizzlies were unable to close that gap, as CCU cruised on for the RMAC win.
Freshman Linda Hernandez (Pueblo, Colo.) started the second game for the Grizzlies, and she pitched admirably in out-dueling Reyna who pitched the entirety of both games for the Cougars. Hernandez went 6.1 innings, giving up just five hits and two runs before handing pitching duties over to freshman Morgan McWilliams.
After saving both games yesterday McWilliams got the win in game two, locking down the Cougars for the remaining 2.2 innings, while striking out two. Hernandez and McWilliams combined to hold CCU hitless for their final four at-bats after the Grizzlies took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Junior center fielder Katelyn Lovato (Northglenn, Colo.) afforded the Grizzlies that lead, driving the ball to the fence in left center field for an inside-the-park, game-tying home run.
After a quick out to start the ninth inning, freshman first baseman Erica Haugum (Arvada, Colo.) drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, setting up Consonero for the game-winning hit up the middle.
The Grizzlies had an excellent weekend, taking three of four games from the Cougars, who entered the weekend tied for second in the RMAC standings.
Lovato and Lindquist led the offensive charge, accounting for a combined nine runs and eight RBIs. For the weekend, Lovato was 7-13, scored seven runs and drove in three runs herself. Lindquist was 5-10, scored twice, registered five RBIs and drew five walks.
ASC played well this weekend back in Alamosa, but they will journey back to Denver next weekend to face the Metro State Road Runners, currently one game ahead of the Grizzlies at eighth in the league standings. Adams State will play doubleheaders against Metro State on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
