The Adams State College Softball team completed a weekend pair of doubleheaders with Chadron State College on Sunday afternoon, splitting the twin-bill again today, winning the first 8-1, before losing the second game to CSC, 7-5.
After taking the ‘W’ in game one, the Grizzlies had the opportunity to bring their record to .500 on the season, but instead own a mark of 13-15 overall and 9-11 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.
In the first game, freshman Kelsey Sellars (Denver, Colo.) went the distance in the circle, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four Eagles to earn her 3rd win. Sellars nearly won both games she started this weekend, but suffered a loss due to unearned runs in Saturday’s opening game.
For the weekend, Sellers pitched 13 innings and allowed just three runs, moving her record to 3-4 on the season.
As Sellers stifled the CSC offense, ASC was able to compile eight runs, thanks in part to three home runs.
Freshman designated player Erika Ecsedy (Saugus, Calif.) and junior center fielder Katelyn Lovato (Northglenn, Colo.) drove home six of ASC’s eight runs. Ecsedy blasted home-runs Nos. 6 and 7 of the season to move into a tie for the team lead, and lead-off hitter Lovato hit her fourth home-run, an inside-the-parker.
As a whole, the ASC offense had 8 runs on 9 hits. Sending CSC’s pitcher, Aryn Grywusiewicz to a 4-8 record on the season . Chadron State College is now 7-13 in the RMAC this season and 9-20 overall.
In game two, the Grizzlies weren’t quite as sharp offensively or pitching-wise. The Eagles had a total of 16 hits for seven runs off ASC pitchers Linda Hernandez (Pueblo, Colo.) and Brandi Lovato (West Valley City, Utah). The Grizzlies game two starter, Hernandez gave up 13 of those 16 hits, lasting 4 2/3 innings, while allowing five runs. Lovato came in relief of Hernandez, and finished the final 2 1/3 innings. Lovato gave up an additional two runs.
Those extra two runs that CSC tacked on were crucial, as ASC got a rally going in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Senior right fielder Lizzy Schossow (Fort Morgan, Colo.) accounted for three of the Grizzlies’ four runs in their last at-bat, taking the Eagle’s pitcher Stephanie Townsend deep to center field for a three-run dinger.
Schossow had two home-runs over the weekend, and now has four on the season. Ecsedy also had a great weekend, hitting three home-runs in four games, and registering 5 RBIs.
After coming out even in both double-headers this weekend, ASC will travel to Denver to face Regis University for another pair of double-headers next Saturday and Sunday. The Rangers are two games ahead of the Grizzlies at 7-7 in the RMAC. Saturday’s games will be played at noon and 2 p.m. and Sunday’s games will be played at 11 p.m. and 1 p.m.
