This past weekend, future Adams State students toured the campus for one of the biggest annual ASC Discovery Days.
Discovery Day is a day meant to inform hopeful ASC students and their families about all that Adams State has to offer them, as well as give them a chance to visit and get a feel for the college. The day starts early in the morning, with families coming from all around Colorado and some from out-of-state.
Parents and students are given a couple of information sessions where they can learn about tuition and enrollment. There was also a special presentation on financial aid, which is something Adams State does that many school tours do not provide. These sessions are led by the Admissions Counselors, who answer any questions that parents or students might have.
“It was a really great experience,” said Julie, a mother of two prospective students. “I felt well informed, and [the counselors] were so polite it just made everything so much easier.”
After the information sessions, the campus tours begin. The tours are led by Students Ambassadors. The Student Ambassadors give the tours because they have first hand experience about the daily life at Adams State, and they can answer questions prospective students might have that other would not have the answer to.
“When you like a person, you want to try and get to know them before you take them out. Well, Discover Day is pretty much the opportunity for students to do that, but with a college rather than a crush,” said Student Ambassador Bella Whitten. “Basically, they all left here saying, ‘I love me some grizzly!’”
On Discovery Day, students got to take a tour of the class buildings, the SUB building, the library, and they even got to take some peeks at student’s dorm rooms. The prospective students also got to take an in-depth look at the athletic facilities, something that many sports-oriented students enjoyed.
“It definitely helps my school choice, being able to look at the Gym and the stadium,” said Joshua Mores, a potential student. “They were really impressive, and it’ll stick in my mind when I look at other schools. The stadium will be hard to beat, though.”
As another plus, the students got to take a peek at an actual classroom lecture. The students got to choose between a few different classes that covered a wide variety of majors that Adams State has to offer, and several professors volunteered their Saturday to give a short lecture to the touring students.
“It was a really cool thing to do,” said hopeful student Jenna Aarons.
The number of students that attended Discovery Day this past Saturday was well over 70 students. Including their family members, the total number of attendees was one of the biggest to date, which is promising for Adams State. Discovery Day is meant to familiarize students with the college and persuade them to attend, and the more students that show up, the better chance they have of being persuaded.
Students and their families had a good time touring the campus and learning about the life of an Adams State student, and the counselors enjoyed it as well.
“My favorite part of Discover Day is seeing the visible excitement on student’s faces, realizing just how special Adams State is and how much they like it here,” said Admissions Counselor Matt Adams. “Combine that with the energy that they bring, it makes my job a lot more satisfying.”
