Senior Chloe Cable (Glendale, Ariz.) led the way with 19 points and sophomore Marissa Peterson (Santa Fe, N.M.) chipped in with a career-high 18 as the Adams State College women’s basketball team put away Western New Mexico University Saturday night in a blowout, winning 88-56.
The Grizzlies move into a 4-way tie for 10th place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings, at 6-10 in the conference and 7-13 overall with the win. Adams State also snapped a season-long 5-game losing streak with their largest margin of the victory of the season.
For the Mustangs, the loss leaves them with a record of 0-20 overall and 0-17 in the RMAC.
The ASC offensive onslaught was a team effort, with all active players scoring at least 4 points. Behind Cable and Peterson, junior Jamonica Hudgins (Las Cruces, N.M.) and sophomore Caitlin Boal (Albuquerque, N.M.) each added a dozen points. Peterson had an excellent shooting night sinking 9-of-12 shots.
Cable, who also led the Grizzlies with 10 rebounds, registered her sixth double-double of the season.
The Grizzlies were active on the defensive end as well. All but two players recorded a steal, totaling 11 steals for the game for ASC. Along with limiting the Mustangs possessions, the Grizzlies also made every shot difficult, holding WNMU to just 32.2 percent (19-of-59) shooting from field goal range.
The most glaring advantage ASC held over WNMU was inside the paint. Forwards Cable and Peterson powered Adams State to a 34-point edge in points in the paint, and the Grizzlies outrebounded the Mustangs 42-18.
Adams State dominated the game from start to finish, never affording Western New Mexico a lead at any point in the game. The Grizzlies took a 24-point lead (45-21) into the intermission after holding WNMU to just 5-of-25 (20.0 percent) from the field in the first half.
The Mustangs however did have a fair amount of success from 3-point range, hitting 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) on the night, led by a trio of triples from Lonnie Sanchez. Kassie Scott also hit a pair of 3-pointers en route to her team leading 17 points. The Grizzlies begin a 4-game RMAC road trip with UC-Colorado Springs next Friday evening at 5:30 p.m.
