Kelly Wins 157-Pound Title at Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open

GREELEY, Colo. – Seven Adams State wrestlers competed unattached at the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open, where sophomore Daniel Kelly (Parker, Colo.) led the Grizzly contingent with a first-place finish and 5-0 record at 157 pounds.
The tournament that was the second that Adams State has attended this season, after wrestling at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo., last weekend. The Grizzlies have four more tournaments scheduled before beginning their dual-meet schedule in January.
Kelly, who posted a 2-2 record at the same tournament last season, won his first tournament in his ASC career while placing for the fifth time. His first two victories came against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) foes Pat Lehnan of Colorado Mesa by major decision, 11-1, and Brandon Montoya of Western State by pin at four minutes and five seconds into the match.
In the championship quarterfinal, Kelly recorded a 12-7 victory over Chase Cuthbertson, wrestling unattached from Utah Valley, and advanced to the final with a pin at 6:55 against Colorado Mesa’ Jon Gappmaier. The final victim of the day was Utah Valley’s Nap Aniclete, who suffered a 7-5 loss against the Kelly in the championships.
Kelly’s two pins on the day were just one behind Utah Valley’s Jade Rauser, who recorded three in the 125-pound bracket to take the award for most pins.
Also in action at 157 pounds, redshirt-freshman Jacob Deaguero (Commerce City, Colo.) posted a record of 1-2. After dropping his opening match against Air Force Prep’s Tyler Mergen, Deaguero needed just 32 seconds to pin Colorado Mines’ Gabriel Martinez, but was the victim of a pin in his final match of the day.
Two other Grizzlies also posted 1-2 records Saturday, including sophomore Dominic Madril (Westminster, Colo.) at 125 pounds and freshman David Arcangel (Lahaina Maui, Hawai’i) at 149 pounds.
Both recorded their lone win of the day in sudden victory, Madril’s coming against Braxton Vandetoolen by a 4-2 tally and Arcangel’s by a 9-7 score over Brandon Lloyd of Air Force Prep.
Grizzly grapplers are next slated to be in action on Dec. 3 as they travel to Kansas for the Fort Hays State Bob Smith Open. Last season, the Grizzlies were led by senior Luke McPeek (Albuquerque, N.M.) who took second, as well as a fourth-place showing from Kelly, at the tournament.
