Sabrina Husmann and Hoyt Anderson from Alamosa Building Supply recently visited the Alamosa Food Bank to drop off several boxes and bags of canned goods and winter coats they collected from a food and clothing drive held at their store. The company offered a $5 discount on merchandise for coat donations and $1 off of a purchase for each donated canned good, up to ten cans.
The two were given a tour of the food bank and stayed to talk with director Mary Ellen Huss about future collaborations between the two parties. Sabrina and Hoyt discussed setting up permanent food and clothing donation boxes at their two stores–Alamosa Building Supply and the La Jara Trading Post to collect for the food bank year-round. The two also expressed interest in sponsoring families for Thanksgiving, both through their businesses and personally. “Everybody deserves to have a meal for sure,” commented Sabrina.
Every year the Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley aims to provide 500 patron families with Thanksgiving boxes that include all the food stuffs necessary for a Thanksgiving feast, including a turkey. Due to an increase in clients and a decrease in foundational support, the Food Bank Network has no budget this year to provide their annual Thanksgiving boxes. The Alamosa Food Bank is running two fundraisers in the next couple of weeks to build up their Thanksgiving goods supply. Success this year will rely wholly on donations and volunteer work. The Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley is holding their annual Community-Wide Thanksgiving Food Drive in the coming week. Collection bags will be distributed to local Alamosa homes this Thursday, Nov. 3. Community members will have a week to fill the bags with canned goods and have them ready to be collected on Thursday, Nov. 10. The Food Bank Network is especially in need of goods that could be used to make a Thanksgiving dinner. Volunteers are needed to help distribute, collect and sort the bags.
The Food Bank Network is also fundraising for monetary donations to supplement the goods collected during the food drive. Sponsor a family for Thanksgiving by giving a monetary donation and you will be providing them with a delicious and wholesome meal on Thanksgiving Day. Donate $22.80 and a family will receive a full box, including a turkey–$10.40 will provide a family with everything except a turkey. Sponsor a family today and you will be making a difference in someone’s life.
