SILVER CITY, N.M. – Adams State’s season-long losing streak was extended to four matches on Saturday night, as the Grizzlies fell to Western New Mexico 21-25, 19-25, 15-25 at Drag’s Court and dropping them into a tie for the Rocky Montain Athletic Conference (RMAC) West Division lead.
The Grizzlies are now 14-8 overall this season and 8-6 in the RMAC after having dropped their first two matches of the year against teams in the West this year. The Mustangs, another of ASC’s close pursuers, pulled to within a half game of the Grizzlies in the standings at 11-10 overall and 7-6 in the league.
Adams State suffered its first winless weekend of the season with losses against New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico.
The Mustangs outhit the Grizzlies throughout, and made 29 kills against just four errors in the final two sets. ASC made 19 errors in the match and hit at just a .162 clip. The Grizzlies also made nine service errors in the match.
Sophomore Letisha Spencer (Rio Rancho, N.M.) led Adams State with eight kills in the match and hit at a .462 clip. Sophomore Deprece Washington (Johnstown, Colo.) also tallied eight kills while hitting .182.
Ziona Verhulsdunk put up a match-best 11 kills in the match for the Mustangs, who committed just eight errors in three sets. The Grizzlies are now even with Colorado State-Pueblo for the RMAC West Division lead after the ThunderWolves topped Fort Lewis in five sets on Saturday.
ASC will have a chance to once again move ahead of the ThunderWolves next weekend as they return to Plachy Hall for the final home weekend of the season, hosting Western State on Friday and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday.
Both nights will begin at 7 p.m. in Plachy Hall, Saturday serving as the Grizzlies’ senior night.
