It’s being seen all over the news. People are going undercover to see just how easy it is. It’s medical marijuana and is becoming a major controversy.
The U.S. is now searching for ways to crackdown on medical marijuana because it is feared that getting a license for it has become too easy. In one case, an undercover patient went in to speak to a physician about an ear ache and reported getting a license for medical marijuana “easier than getting most other prescriptions.”
There have also been cases of people getting medical marijuana licenses and selling to make money, and it’s definitely not chump change. Sources have claimed that some are able to make in the millions each month. And the real catch is that these people are not paying taxes. Some say it would be smarter for the government to legalize the drug in general and tax it similar to cigarettes.
There is even a new debit card for purchasing medical marijuana. It is a card people can put money on and buy their marijuana without hassle. The purpose is to have more regulation without the use of cash, but some question if it is making medical marijuana purchases even easier.
The major controversy stems from the question of whether or not this plant should be used for legitimate medicinal purposes and if it’s getting out of control. Currently, the U.S. will not prosecute in states that allow the use of medical marijuana. However, there are some who oppose this because they believe too many are taking advantage of the accessibility and simply claiming nonexistent chronic pain.
Advocates of medical marijuana say it can reduce chronic pain, nausea and additional symptoms associated with cancer and other serious illnesses. In 1996, California became the first state to make it legal to sell marijuana to people with doctors’ prescriptions. The other states that allow some use of marijuana for medical purposes are Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
What do you think about the use of medical marijuana? If you have an opinion, let us know by writing a commentary.
