Grizzlies complete Peaks Classic in 10th

Led by second and third round efforts of 2-over par 74 by seniors Josh Hensley (Alamosa, Colo.) and Jonathan Atencio (Alamosa, Colo.),  respectively, the Adams State College men’s golf team posted scores of 318 and 319 after a wind-blown opening round of 328 at the Peaks Classic, which was contested Monday and Tuesday here at Grandote Peaks Golf Club.
Posting a total score of 966, the Grizzlies finished 10th amongst that number of teams, who each played 54 holes plus a Sunday afternoon practice round on the 7,085-yard, par-72 course.
The host Wayland Baptist (Texas) University Pioneers claimed top honors with a fine 7-over par score of 871, good for an 11-shot cushion over Colorado State-Pueblo, one of six Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squads.
Hensley, who started the tournament as the Grizzlies’ No. 3 man, led the squad overall posting a 3-round total of 238 (+22), good for a tie for 33rd place.  He carded an 83 in Monday’s morning round before coming back for a 74 later in the day.  He then finished with an 81 in Tuesday’s third round.
Meanwhile, Atencio tied for 39th with a 241 (+25).  He had carded rounds of 82 and 85 on Monday.
Redshirt freshman Willie Squires (Pueblo West, Colo.) was just one short further back, finishing 42nd at 242 (+26).  He improved throughout the affair, firing an 82 on Monday morning before shaving a stroke off his total in the afternoon.  He then finished Tuesday with a 79.
Sophomore Ben Kelloff (Monte Vista, Colo.), playing as an individual, took 46th at 245 (+29) carding three fairly consistent rounds of 80, 83 and 82, the best three of his collegiate career.
Meanwhile, true freshman Scott Patrick (Canon City, Colo.) finished in a tie for 48th at 247 (+31).  He turned in cards of 82 and 78 on Monday, the latter of which matched his season-best, before struggling through a few holes en-route to an 87 on Tuesday.
Junior Andrew Kennedy (Casper, Wyo.) rounded out the Grizzly effort with rounds of 92, 89 and 85 finishing 53rd at 266 (+50).
The Grizzlies are off for more than a week before making their longest trip of the fall, heading to Gothenburg, Neb. and Wild Horse Golf Club for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/RMAC Crossover on Sept. 25 and 26.
