The construction on the much heralded Residence at the Rex is underway but in the very beginning stages. Since the ground breaking ceremony held on July 9, construction crews have been establishing the foundation and framework on the new 16,250 square foot stadium/ residence hall.
“They’re working on getting the plumbing and groundwork ready right now,” Jeff Horton, Supervisor for Facility Services here on campus, says. Just recently, crews have linked together the existing city water, storm, and sewer systems with new building. While crews work to complete the plumbing, Stadium Drive will be closed until November 24.
Renovations are also going on in Coronado Hall. While the future plans call for all four wings to be renovated, only the A-Wing is currently under construction. According to Horton, the renovations include a new heating system, more efficient windows, better sound installation, and completely modified bathrooms. The upgrades will also include lighting and improvements to better suit the Americans With Disabilities Act. Right now crews are still in the beginning stages of construction.
The entire project, including the renovations on the A-Wing of Coronado Hall, will cost an estimated $22 million and is expected to be completed by the 2010 academic school year. The Residence Hall will include 16 four-bedroom suites, complete with a kitchen, bathroom, and a small living area that should house up to 64 students. The new living space will be the first residence hall constructed here on the campus in the last 40 years.
The stadium portion of the building is said to seat 3,000 fans along with a brand new press box and new locker rooms. The stadium will also include a new lighting system making it possible to host regional high school games and several tournaments at night. One of the more exciting features of the new building for students is the addition of a restaurant. Kelsey Sanchez, a student here at Adams State, is particularly excited about the idea of having an on-campus restaurant. “I think it is a great idea,” she says. “The restaurant will make it more convenient and affordable for students.”
The construction plans do not stop there, however. Over the next five years, between $40 and $50 million worth of renovations and improvements are expected here on campus. Massive remodeling of the ES building, music building, and the Leon Memorial Concert Hall is expected, according to Bill Mansheim, the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
