Athlete of the Week: April 21

Indira Spence

Adams State College junior sprinter and hurdler for the women’s track and field team, Indira Spence, has been named as the ASC Grizzlies Athlete of the Week for the week ending on April 17.
Spence set three NCAA qualifying marks in as many efforts over the weekend as she competed in Walnut, Calif. at the Mt. SAC Relays. She set the tenth fastest time in the world (13.08 seconds) this year in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday.  That mark leads the NCAA Division II performance list and is the fastest of any Jamaican this year.  She also ran a leg on the Grizzlies’ automatic NCAA Division II qualifying and winning 4X100-meter relay (45.10) team on Friday. On Thursday, she competed in the CalState-LA Twilight Open where she ran a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 24.00 to win the 200.
The ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week award, which will be handed out weekly, was selected by a vote of media members and ASC athletic administrators as well as by visitors to the Grizzly website and to the ASC Grizzlies’ Facebook page, who could cast their vote in an online poll.
Spence won the vote in descisive fashion as she nabbed all but one first place vote among the media and administrators votes and she nabbed 30.8 percent of the votes that were cast online through the website and facebook.  Ryan McNiff of the men’s track team, Kristen Payne of the softball program,  Amanda Hisel and Kevin Betrand of the lacrosse teams were also nominated.
