Alamosa– As of September 3, 2009 Micah Anderson is no longer AS&F President for the 2009-2010 school year. He formally stepped down at the senate meeting on September 3rd due to failure to meet requirements as stated in the AS&F constitution. Taking his place as president is Jacque Archuleta.
The executive board saw changes as well. Zak Dahlberg also stepped down as vice president of finance. Taking his place is Rachael Raguindin. Other positions filled on the executive board are Erica Holmes as vice president of internal affairs and Georgia Anderson as executive secretary. The position of vice president of external affairs is currently vacant and is being run by the entire executive board. It will eventually be filled after the executive board elections for the 2010-2011 school year in November of this year.
Currently there are 17 openings on the legislative branch. The legislative branch is filled by student and faculty senators that represent different departments and schools on campus. As senators, students attend weekly meetings to vote on bills and discuss student concerns. These openings include three senators at large; one senator from the school of arts and letters; one senator from the school of business; three from the school of math science, and technology; one from the school of education; three freshman senators; two faculty members; one non- traditional student; and two students from the school of graduate studies. Current senators are Jenna Bohnen as a senator at large, Andrea Livingston and Brenda Chavez from the School of Arts and Letters, Christina Chavez and Will Naas from the school of buisness, no one from the school of Math, Science, and Technology, Calvin-Paul Stewart and Nicole Plowright from the School of Education, Mick Daniel as a faculty senator, Marian Schlagbaumm as a non-traditional student, and no one from the School of Graduate Studies. Current senator were either were appointed by other senators or ran on the ballot last spring.
Any returning student that is interested in becoming a senator should see the president, Jacque Archuleta. After that they will begin an appointment process. Be prepared to answer some quick questions and bring a resume.
The election process will begin at the end of this month for freshmen wanting to become senators. Packets can be found on the senate office door in the student life center, and are due September 18 by 5:00 pm. On Tuesday, September 29 at 6:00 pm there will be a candidates meeting. Elections will be October 1st and 2nd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Student Union Building.
Anyone is welcome to attend senate meetings and find out what is being discussed. Starting in October senate meetings will be every Monday night at 6:00. They are held in the business building room 142.
