Junior Kelsey McSpadden posted a Sunday round of 80 and a 2-day total of 162 to earn her Adams State College record setting ninth top-10 finish of her career as both she and the Grizzly women’s golf team finished fourth at the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolf Invitational, which wrapped up here at Desert Hawk Golf Course.
McSpadden, who matched her career-best 2-round total while earning her highest ever tournament finish, helped lead the Grizzlies to a solid Sunday team score of 334 and a tournament total of 678. In the process, she moved past Christa Seitz for the most top 10 finishes in Grizzly history.
The Grizzlies also had a top-10 finish from true freshman Kyra Garrison, who finished in a tie for sixth place with a 2-round total of 165, the best of her career by two shots. Garrison, who led the entire tournament in par-3 scoring, posted a score of 84 in her Sunday trip around the 6,328-yard, par-72 course after leading the Grizzlies with an 80 in Saturday’s round. She made two more birdies in Sunday’s round and finished tied for the tournament lead with four.
As a team, the Grizzlies led the field with 10 as McSpadden carded three alone while leading the tournament in par-5 scoring, playing the longest holes in 1-under par throughout the competition.
Senior Kendall Martin also carded an 84 on Sunday and finished in a 17th place tie with a 2-day total of 177. Fellow senior Codi Hegg was just behind with a 36-hole count of 178. She had an 86 on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Grizzly sophomore Samantha Hall finished in a tie for 28th place with a 2-day score of 183. She posted a 94 on Sunday.
The Grizzlies had entered the day in a tie for third place in the 8-team standings but could not quite keep pace with the host ThunderWolves, who like tournament winners Mesa State and runner-up Montana State-Billings, posted a team score of 327 on Sunday.
Mesa State had a 2-round total of 661 and won the team title by three shots over the Yellowjackets. CSU-Pueblo finished third at 671 while the Grizzlies finished in the top half of the standings by 39 shots over Colorado Christian.
Montana State-Billings’ Melissa Saken won the individual title with a 2-round total of 157 while Mesa State’s Jennifer Hilts finished two shots back at 159. CSU-Pueblo’s Dominique Dinallo finished third at 161 thanks to a 77 on Sunday, the best round of the 47 players in the field.
