The Adams State College men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up action at the Mesa State Invitational at El Pomar Natatorium on Sunday, where both Grizzly squads took fifth place and the women wrote three new program records.
On the women’s side of action, the Grizzlies added 131 points to their day one total and finished the competition with 305 points. Host Mesa State took the women’s title with 1,196 points, followed by Colorado Mines with 748. Third and fourth in the women’s team competition were Metro State and Colorado College, tallying 466 and 432 points, respectively. The Grizzlies were the only team without a diving squad at the meet, and diving totals were figured into the team scores.
The Adams State men were unable to add to their day one total of 41 points, which netted them fifth place for the weekend. The Maverick men were victorious at their own meet, topping runner-up Colorado Mines 1,313-1,084. Coloraod College took third for the men with 506 points, and Metro State was fourth with 439.
After having each tallied a pair of school records on Saturday, freshmen Kelly Erickson and Jennell Higgs each wrote their names in the record book again on Sunday.
Erickson, whose Saturday records came in the 100 yard breast and 50 yard butterfly, set a new ASC mark in the 100 yard butterfly, taking third place with a time of one minute, 2.07 seconds, improving upon her own mark in the event by .74 seconds.
Higgs, who became the owner of the Grizzly records in the 200 yard backstroke and 200 yard butterfly on day one of action, improved upon her previous program record in the 400 yard individual medley by more than five seconds, placing third in a time of 4:55.76.
Also improving upon a school record that she already held, freshman Amanda Angelovich bested her earlier mark in the 50 yard breaststroke as she touched the wall in 37.21 seconds during prelims before clocking a time of 38.59 seconds for sixth place in the finals.
While not a new program best, Erickson also clocked the Grizzlies season best time in the 100 yard backstroke as she placed sixth with a time of 1:05.94. Higgs also posted ASC’s fastest time of the year in the 200 yard freestyle, finishing ninth in 2:06.04.
Freshman Max Berumen clocked his own season best time of 25.13 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle, but no Grizzly men managed to qualify for the finals in any event on Sunday.
In all, the Grizzlies recorded seven new school records on the women’s side of action over the weekend, and one new modern era record for the men.
With the conclusion of the Mesa State Invitational, the Grizzlies have concluded the 2010 portion of their 2010-11 season. The Grizzlies will return to action on Jan. 21-23 in Colorado Springs for the Colorado College Classic, their final meet of the season before the (RMAC) Championships on Feb. 10-12 .
