Adams State College and the surrounding community are preparing to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in October. “Compartiendo Tradiciones,” a wide variety of events, have been scheduled to highlight the value of Hispanic culture both in the past and now, and the impacts of hispanic contributions on our daily culture. Two art exhibits, “Recuerdos y Reflexiones” and “Dia de Los Muertos” opened monday, October 5 and will be open to visitors through October 30 in the ASC Community Partnerships Gallery. Among the festivities scheduled this month are a book signing, special guest Mark Gonzales, musicians, live theatre performances and dancing.
Both art exhibits are open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Mondays through Friday. There is no admission to see the art. On Tuesday, October 20th, the exhibits will hold a reception for Kathy T. Hettinga and her book, Grave Images of the San Luis Valley, for a book signing from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The Gallery is located on the corner of Main St. and Edgemont Blvd.
ASC will play host to special guest Mark Gonzales, a Californian Slam Poet. His performance is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Adams State Theater Building. His presentation, “From Indigenous to Indigo” is also a free event.
Thursday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. ASC is hosting music by guitarristas Roberto Capocchi of Santa Fe and other Adams State music students in a free concert in Leon Recital Hall. The free music presentation continues with La Familia Vigil from El Rito, N.M. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. also in Leon Recital Hall. La Familia Vigil features songwriter/musician Cipriano Vigil.
Friday, October 23 ASC features Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center’s production, “La Carpa de Los Rasquachis” at 8 p.m. in the Adams State Theater Building. Tickets can be reserved by calling 719-587-TIXX.
Noche de Bailes featuring Espiritu Maya/La Banda, Salsa Latin Ballroom of Semillas de La Tierra persents the final event of Hispanic heritage month at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Carson Auditorium.
