Words of Wisdom from the Wise

It was Friday, in the Student Life Center. The POET club had arranged for Dr. Tomlin to speak on the topic proactive passion and how we can productively channel our inspirations and motivations. He was asked to share his expertise and insights, on behalf of those who don’t have many positive examples to turn to. He was asked to pass down his wisdom, as an elder who has seen much and helped many. It was a Friday afternoon lecture, but what it transformed itself into was a true consejo.
A consejo is a word that carries heavy connotations of family and obligation; of responsibility and accountability. It is a deep expression of generational awareness and the need to strengthen humanity by strengthening the youth. A consejo is the passing of knowledge and wisdoms from one generation to another. This sharing of a collective consciousness creates a culture of cohesive minds, moving in the direction of stability and harmony.
As Department Chair of the Business department, Dr. Tomlin is very familiar with the responsibilities inherent within generativity. Often, he takes the time to read poetry at faculty meetings, an expression of his desire to connect with others on a very humanistic level. He is regularly seen throughout the halls off the Business building smiling, eager for conversation and ready to help those who need guidance. His natural leadership in action is as inspirational as the words of wisdom that he speaks.
Last Friday, his energy filled the Student Life Center, while he spoke at the POET Club Consejo. He described the importance of authenticity, stressing the importance of sincerity and strong ethics. He said that a social movement begins with individual movement, and asked which of us had the courage to create a change. “I can’t imagine my life without passion,” Dr. Tomlin said during the consejo, almost as if to himself, “I think it would lead to resentment, and such feelings have never benefitted me.”
Dr. Tomlin was honored with the newly created status of POET Club Savant, an honor he gratefully accepted. Although purely symbolic, it serves as a bond of friendship and support between the POET club and the Business department faculty. It’s an attempt to be the change that is sought from the world. Life is ours to create, so ask yourself if you have the courage to create a brighter future.
The POET Club Consejos are every Friday at noon in the Student Life Center. All are welcome to attend and be a part of a transformative experience that improves student connectivity. Meet faculty leaders who want to help. Build your university network and expand your resources. Come to be inspired.
