GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Sophomore LiErin Wilson (Silverton, Colo.) tied ASC’s program record by netting four goals Saturday afternoon, all in the second half, but the Grizzlies were unable to dig their way out of a 6-goal deficit at halftime in falling to Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA) foe Colorado Mesa in the 2012 season opener at Walker Field.
The Grizzlies begin the season 0-1 overall and in league action, while Colorado Mesa moves to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the WILA.
Not only did Wilson match the Grizzlies individual record for goals in a game, but the team’s nine strikes also matched an Adams State record, set last season against Converse (S.C.) on March 28.
Freshman Amanda Morgan (Gypsum, Colo.) added a pair of goals, one in the first half to bring ASC within a goal (2-3) with 20:58 left until the break, as well as the final tally of the game with 2:01 to play.
Colorado Mesa’s Rachel Sutton scored four goals also, while Lexie Chavez and Amanda Simon accounted for three each. The trio scored seven of the Mavs’ nine goals in the first half, during which time CMU held a 30-10 advantage in shots and put 21 on goal.
Freshman Danica Kristiansen (Lake Forest, Calif.) was busy in the net, facing 40 shots on goal in the game and making 24 saves, eight more than the previous Grizzly single-game record.
ASC is slated to return to action next Saturday afternoon on the road against WILA member Regis. The Rangers are 1-3 overall and 1-0 in WILA play, having topped CMU 22-9 on Feb. 18.
