According to the American College of Cardiology, people who have lower Vitamin D levels are linked with having a higher presence of coronary heart disease. Vitamin D is crucial to have to prevent heart disease; without it there is a higher chance of heart disease. However, this does not mean that having high vitamin D levels will prevent or reduce the risk heart disease all together.
In a study to determine the correlation between vitamin D and coronary artery disease, vitamin D was observed in 70.4 percent of the patients. The patients went through a coronary angiography; which is an image test that is used to evaluate how blood flows through the arteries and into the heart. The test concluded that patients with a vitamin D deficiency are associated with higher risk of coronary artery disease. While 20 percent had a higher risk of sever disease. Patients with higher levels had a lower risk of the disease. Monica Verdoia, M.D. a specialist cardiologist at the Department of Cardiology, Ospedale Maggiore della Carità, Eastern Piedmont University in Novara, Italy, and Prof. Giuseppe De Luca, an investigator from the Novara Atherosclerosis study group stated, “Although evidence of benefits with vitamin D supplementation in cardiovascular outcomes are still lacking, strategies to raise endogenous vitamin D should probably be advised in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.”
Patients that have cardiovascular disease, and those who have not, should have a diet containing vitamin D combined with moderate exercise. Vitamin D functions with the immune system and the inflammatory process. The inflammatory process help rid the risk factors of having heart disease. Having people aware that Vitamin D is a necessity is a challenge. The team who conducted the study is planning to have clinical trials that will evaluate how to treat people with vitamin D deficiency.
It is hard to understand how many vitamins our body needs. Especially for runners, there is so much to take to keep the body healthy and strong. I never did understand why vitamin D was so important. This article definitely helps to understand the importance to have a diet with vitamin D. Without vitamin D, because of the strain we put out body, it will make it much weaker.
