“While Russia chooses to follow the road of provocations, further sanctions and consequences are unavoidable”
In an official press conference in Malaysia on Sunday April 27th, during his official Asian political trip, President Obama appealed to his European colleagues, talking about the incredible importance of the mutual support of USA and EU in sanctioning Russia. This statement came as a follow up to the Saturday’s intention of the G7 countries for imposing a new packet of sanctions to Russia.
Obama expressed his confirmation on the question of further needed sanctions to cool down this political crisis between Russia and Ukraine. However, he emphasized on the fact that if USA acts on their own with imposing sanctions, the results will not be as expected. The hugely important sectorial EU sanctions were also mentioned as a reason why the two states (USA and EU) should act together.
Barack Obama is strongly against the suggestion of US imposing their own and separate package of sanctions over a wide range of people within the Russian economy and political world. The US president also warned about how Russia is fueling this conflict and not putting any efforts towards the peaceful resolution of the problem, the larger the quantity of the sanctions and the more severe they will be.
The president mentioned that there is evidence that Russia is encouraging the separatist movements and actions in the Eastern and Southern parts of Ukraine. Barack Obama explained that Russia is trying to portray the Ukraine crisis through the prism of the Cold war, in which we all know Washington D.C. and Moscow were on the opposite ends of the stick. However, the US president appealed to everyone to understand that the Russia-Ukraine crisis has nothing to do with the historical, political, and economical differences between Russia and USA; it only deals with the sovereignty of Ukraine.
