The Adams State Senate has been discussing the need to make several changes in the school constitution and bylaws. The number of corrections has lead the senate body to construct a completely new constitution over the last several weeks.

One of the major factors leading to the reformation of the constitution is the restrictions it put on the senate office.

“The existing constitution is extremely out of date,” Jen Ribar, president of ASC Senate says. “It’s 2010 and it’s time for the constitution to be updated.” The new constitution will help the senate run more smoothly.

There is a large number of students who don’t realize the amount of money the senate controls. It is important and beneficial to the school for the senate to be an efficient governing body to allow for the proper handling of funds.

Students interested, or already involved with, school clubs will likely feel the biggest impact after the new constitution and bylaws are approved. According to Ribar, several adjustments in the way funds will be issued are expected. “This isn’t to say that new clubs can’t be created rather in just the way they are funded,” she said.

Major changes may also be noted within the senate itself. An increased number of seats will be added to the senate, creating much excitement for many of the existing members.

The vote to approve the constitution has been pushed back until March 22, after originally being scheduled for Monday evening. “The deadline was pushed back because there were still several things to add.” Ribar said.

“We needed a little more time so that we could take care of everything all at once rather then having to go back and fix it.”

The senate is working tirelessly to improve life here at the college. The constitution will entail everything from monetary issues to student life concerns. The documents being presented will in large effect everyone attending the college so your concern plays in your best interests.

A revised copy of the edited constitution and by laws can be found in the Student Life Center or posted on their AS&F Facebook page. The senators are encouraging students to come out and voice their opinions concerning several issues discussed in the document by attending the AS&F meetings on Monday nights. If you are interested and would like to add additional input, you may do so by commenting through the AS&F Facebook discussion board.
