Seated on a throne, dressed in candy cane striped tights, elf shoes and an elfin hat, John Hauser, Adams State University senior theatre major, gives it to the audience straight – from the writings of David Sedaris – about what Christmas really means. “The Santaland Diaries,” directed by Jim Willis, opens November 19 at 7:30 p.m. and runs nightly through Saturday, November 23.
Hauser said working with Willis has been “amazing.” He described Willis’ directing style as open and approachable. “Jim has the best comedic timing.” Performing the one-man show was a little intimidating for Hauser at first, but soon became exciting. “It is all just me. I am the center of attention and I love it.” Along with being the center of attention, Hauser said he has always admired the writing of Sedaris, “David Sedaris is incredibly funny and has such style and flair. Also, few students can say they have had the privilege of working solely with Jim on this big of a project.”
Although Sedaris takes a rather cynical and very humorous look at what it means to be an elf at Macy’s Department Store during the holiday season, Hauser said the play illustrates the good and bad of what Christmas is today. “My favorite time of year is Christmas,” Hauser said. “The play has glimpses of sweetness and the ending connects with the audience in a very honest way.”
Willis knew he wanted to direct Hauser in “The Santaland Diaries” as soon as he met him. This year the program’s schedule and Hauser’s availability worked for Willis; in the past he’s always been committed to other shows. “John is such a fine young actor that he’s always in demand. I’m thrilled to be working with him.”
