Constitution Day was celebrated at Adams last Thursday, Sept.15, with a  lecture, “The United State Constitution and Bill of Rights: Are All Persons Born in the United State Citizens?” examining the impact of the U.S. Constitution towards the range of citizens in the US today. The lecture was put on by the History, Government and Philosophy department at Adams State College in  recognition of the nationwide anniversary of the Constitutional Convention’s last gathering. The lecture was created and presented by Dr. Stephen C. Roberds, ASC associate professor of government.
This year for Constitution Day, Roberds’ talk and discussion of the Constitution and Bill of Rights encouraged the audience to come to terms with the various views that the language of the document leads itself to ambiguity. The presentation details the strengths and overall fallouts among the document, and the occurrence of the misinterpretation of the rights we all take for granted. Delving into efficiency of the Supreme Court and the hang-ups that various political affiliations use to interpret the Constitution, Roberd’s discussion offered to give the audience a deeper understanding and appreciation to a document and concept that we all are aware of, but few actually know much about. The information presented in this discussion as well as the evidence was presented in print-off copies of the constitution for everyone to see and to take home, leaving a further sense of awareness at the evening’s conclusion. Many who attended surely left the event and the lecture with a deeper appreciation for the Constitution and US citizen’s rights as well as awareness of future Constitution Days to come.
Constitution Day, otherwise known as Citizenship day, recognizes the events that took place on Sept. 17, 1787 when the delegates to the Constitutional Convention convened for the last time to sign their document. For decades, mainly educational institutions and government industries have held Constitution Day in observation of the solidification of the nation and the rights bestowed under the constitution and the Bill of Rights. Colleges and universities in the United States celebrate this historic event on Sept. 17, or the closest day in proximity.
Like all ASC faculty Lectures, all members of the ASC community and residents of the San Luis Valley are encouraged to attend.
