Last Friday evening Adams State College held their annual Leadership Banquet. This banquet is intended to honor students for their excellence in leadership in the Adams State College community and beyond. Departments nominate students they believe embody the characteristics of a leader for this honor and the evening is dedicated to those nominated. Of the nominees, by category, one student is selected to receive the Leadership Award.  On behalf of the Grizzly Testing and Learning Center, Charles “Scotty” Pressley was nominated and received this award.
Pressley has worked in the Adams State community as a peer tutor for a number of years in various subjects. Tanya Martin, Tutoring Coordinator, says “I have had the opportunity to watch how he is able to interact with students with ease, while creating a safe learning environment.” During his time at the Grizzly Testing and Learning Center (GTLC), Pressley has demonstrated his commitment to promoting academic excellence and providing opportunities for student success.
Through his work at the GTLC, Pressley has had to attend yearly training sessions on effective tutoring skills as well as communication sessions. Martin says, “Scotty has proven to be an effective and efficient communicator with peers, faculty, and staff. I have found him to be a very positive employee and committed to excellence and pride in his work.” Furthermore, Pressley has fulfilled the requirements to qualify as a College Reading and Learning Association level one certified tutor. Pressley attends a minimum of ten hours of training as well as maintaining a minimum of 25 contact hours of tutoring in an academic year. He is currently working on his level two certification by assisting Martin with the student engagement workshops.
Along with his dedication to the Adams State community, Pressley is an active member in the HPPE club, Adams Atoms, and an active participant in his local church. These commitments have not prevented Pressley from taking on a full academic course load nor taken him away from his commitment as a tutor at GTLC and Student Support Services, or his lab assistant position in the chemistry department.  Additionally, Pressley also volunteers at the Rocky Mountain Prevention Resource Center.
The Leadership banquet also was a forum for the Exemplary Service to the Community, the Student Life and Recreation, AS&F Student Government, Grizzly Activity Board, Student Engagement & Success, Exemplary Service to Adams State College, Student Support Services, Resident Assistant, and AS&F Club Leadership awards. Other awards were the Auxiliary Service and Emerging Leader Awards.
On a closing note, Harry S. Truman once said, “Men [and women] make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” Thank you Adams State students, faculty, and staff for all that you do to make our community what it is.
