Patrick, Kelloff Pace Men’s Golfers in Final round

PUEBLO, Colo.— Freshman Scott Patrick (Canon City, Colo.) posted another team-leading score of 77 and set a new 54-hole career-best while sophomore Ben Kelloff (Monte Vista, Colo.) matched his career-best round with a second straight round of 78 as they lead the Adams State College men’s golf team on Monday in the third and final round of the DQ Wolf Pack Invitational, hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo here at Walking Stick Golf Course.
Patrick, who had posted rounds of 77 and 74 on Sunday, the second of which was a career-low, finished the tournament with a 3-round score of 228 (+12), a full 8-shot improvement over his former 54-hole best. Patrick, who has now led the Grizzlies in scoring during each of their 10 rounds this spring, also took over the overall team scoring average lead in the process and is now averaging 79.3 shots per round throughout the 2011-12 season.
He finished 29th in the tournament, played by 44 players on the 7,243-yard, par-72 course.
Meanwhile, senior Jonathan Atencio (Alamosa, Colo.), who had his best round rounds of the spring (78 and 76) on Sunday, posted a 82 on Monday and finished 34th at 236 (+20). Kelloff and junior Andrew Kennedy finished in a tie for 39th place at 248 (+32).
Kelloff had posted a 92 in Sunday’s first round but rallied to card a 78 on Sunday afternoon, which was a 2-shot improvement over his former career-best. Meanwhile, Kennedy posted an 83 on Monday after similar rounds of 83 and 82 on Sunday.
As a team, the Grizzlies posted a team score of 320 on Monday and finished the 54 holes at 960 (+96), slipping back to ninth place.
The Colorado Mines Orediggers won the team title at 845 (-19) after the Orediggers posted another sub-par team score of 286 (-2) on Monday. The host ThunderWolves placed second at 861 (-3) as they posted a Monday-best 281 to close the gap and move under par. Colorado Mesa and Regis both posted 284’s on Monday and finished third and fourth, respectively at 864 (E) and 870 (+6) while Trinidad State Junior College and Colorado Christian tied for fifth at 883 (+19).
South Dakota Mines (946, +82) and Oklahoma Panhandle State (951, +87) took seventh and eighth, respectively, as they moved back ahead of the Grizzlies with Monday team scores of 305 (+17) and 303 (+15), respectively.
Colorado Mines’ Jim Knous won the individual title in a playoff over CSU-Pueblo’s James Berry after both posted scores of 70 in Monday’s third round to finish in a tie at 10-under par 206. Colorado Mesa’s Brandon Bingaman took third at 210 (-6) after carding a 66 on Monday, the day’s best score.
The Grizzlies will now make final preparations for the upcoming Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held next Monday and Tuesday at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
