Model UN Club Sets Strong Example for Outward Thinking

Over the Weekend, the Model UN club held a special camp that simulated formal processes members of the United Nations would typically participate in. Aimed at being a recruitment tool for potential future club members, its main goal was to provide an experience of what is to be expected, as well as to raise a global awareness of world events. Participants were divided into representative countries and asked to come to a resolution regarding several issues that the world currently faces, such as carbon emissions and renewable energy.
“Our club is one in which we focus on interpreting life from a global perspective. As club advisor, I strive to push club members to think outside the box,” Dr. Centeno stated after the camp had concluded. Global citizenship is something that is not often discussed outside of political science classes, yet the Model UN maintains that they are driven by a global obligation that inspires them to serve the world they live in by excelling beyond the classroom.
To demonstrate this, Model UN club regularly travels abroad in an effort to promote their values and ideals, while also creating experiences for their members to grow from. Traveling to several different countries throughout Europe over the last several years, they have gone the extra mile to honor the spirit of Adams State University, winning the Best Delegate Award at international conferences in Geneva and Rome, respectively. The Model UN camp this past weekend set a strong example for others to follow. From the individual dedication of each student involved, to the symbolic portrayal of a unified body working toward a better tomorrow, a tone was set for a prosocial movement. It appeared to be a call to others around campus to shed individual ambitions and to ask what can be done to improve the world we live in. So ask yourself what you can do to add to the world.
For all who would like to know more about Model UN, you can attend their weekly meetings held in McD 381 on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30pm. Also, consider taking content-related courses such as Hgp 279 and Pols 380.
