1878- The first golf match between Oxford and Cambridge takes place and Oxford wins.
1887- Earmuffs are patented by Chester Greenwood from Maine.
1897- San Diego State University is founded in California.
1921- Mongolia declares its independence from China.
1925- In the state of Tennessee, it is unlawful to teach evolution.
1928- In NYC the “Three Musketeers” musical by Rudolph Friml premieres.
1930- At Lowell Observatory, Clyde Tombaugh announces his discovery of Pluto.
1960- The National Football League’s Chicago Cardinals move to St. Louis.
1968-“Lady Madonna” by the Beatles is released in the UK.
1969- Apollo 9, after completing the first flight of the Command/Service Module, returns to Earth.
1989- Discovery 8, 27th U.S. shuttle, launched and it was the first countdown done by a woman.
2008- The price of Gold in the New York Mercantile Exchange hits $1,000 for the very first time.
2012- It is announced that there will be no more printed copies made of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
