La Puente Hosts Variety of Communal Activities

1) FAIR
I hope everyone was able to make it to La Puente’s booth at the Volunteer Fair on Wednesday to play some corn hole and meet some of our fabulous AmeriCorps members. If you didn’t get a chance to stop by it’s not too late to sign up for volunteer opportunities! 2) CARES
Saturday September 21st is ASU Cares Day. La Puente will be hosting several activities throughout the day including: cooking meals at the shelter, assisting in the Alamosa and Monte Vista thrift stores, and gleaning at a nearby farm. If you are interested in any of these activities you can sign up on the ASU website on the Cares Day page.

3) HOPE
Next week, September 23-27, is HOPE Week. Each year La Puente celebrates Homelessness Outreach and Prevention Education, and this year the focus is on Family Homelessness.

Monday, September 23rd at 7:00PM there will be a documentary screening of “Poor Kids: A PBS Frontline Documentary” at Milagros Coffeehouse with discussion after. Milagros is located at 529 Main Street.

Wednesday, September 25th the Alamosa community is invited to come for dinner at the shelter beginning at 6:00PM. Following will be a Candlelight Vigil beginning at 7:00PM beginning at the shelter and ending at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The shelter is located at 917 State Street.

Friday September 27th there will be a Closing Reception from 5:00-6:30 at Milagros Coffeehouse with light refreshments provided.

Visit Milagros any time during September to see storyboards sharing stories from the Adelante Program, with artwork representing families from an elementary class hung during HOPE Week.

There will also be an article series in the Valley Courier discussing various aspects of Family Homelessness.
